VISTA, or Volunteers in Service to America, is a national service program operated by the Corporation for National and Community service. VISTA members serve for one year, represent all walks of life, and work to strengthen the capacity of YNDC’s programming to better meet needs at a citywide scale.
YNDC hosts 5 AmeriCorps VISTAs annually and engages them in four critical program areas, including housing, neighborhood stabilization, community planning, and vacant land reuse. YNDC’s AmeriCorps VISTAs have planned and coordinated community workday events, developed new education programs, recruited and trained volunteers, created new output tracking mechanisms and processes, contributed to the development of publicly-adopted planning documents, and countless other activities which have helped to significantly expand the scale and impact of our work. YNDC’s AmeriCorps VISTAs engage hundreds of volunteers annually and leverage tens of thousands of dollars in in-kind donations and services.
YNDC is also seeking candidates for the position of VISTA Leader, who serves as a guide to other VISTAs and supports them in accomplishing the goals of their assignments. Applicants for the VISTA Leader must have completed at least one year of service as a VISTA in order to be eligible for the position.
VISTAs serve at YNDC on a full time basis and receive a living allowance to help them make ends meet. VISTAs also receive a child care benefit (if eligible), a health care benefit, and can receive either a cash stipend (approximately $1,200) or a larger education award (approximately $5,700) to put toward school or student loans upon successful completion of service. YNDC also allows VISTAs to maintain a part-time job outside of service hours for additional income.
