In honor of Earth Day 2024, YNDC and Mahoning Valley TreeCorps worked with Youngstown CityScape volunteers to plant trees in Youngstown on Saturday April 20, 2024! Participants learned about best practices for tree planting and added four new trees to the city canopy.
According to the National Tree Benefit Calculator https://www.arborday.org/calculator/ these four small trees will immediately provide $20 in benefits this year, and that number only increases as the trees grow! This year alone, these trees will intercept 132 inches of stormwater runoff, reduce atmospheric carbon by 44 pounds, conserve 8 Kilowatt/hours of electricity for cooling, and reduce consumption of oil or natural gas by 4 therm. If these trees are cared for and grow to reach a 6-inch trunk diameter, these benefits increase to $108 per year! This project is supported by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
