On Tuesday, September 29, YNDC and Academy for Urban Scholars High School partnered to plant seven trees in the devil strips surrounding the school.
Neighborhood Stabilization Program Assistant Jacob Stanko and Certified Arborist and Training Manager Lola Lewis demonstrated the various steps of tree planting to a group of students. While students took on planting, Jacob and Lola discussed care tips, different species, and benefits of street trees.
Four trees were planted in the devil strip adjacent to Market Street. Three trees were planted in the devil strip adjacent to E Auburndale Avenue. The time spent planting also counted as community service hours for the students, which will count toward their high school graduation requirements.
Mikah Pomales from Academy for Urban Scholars High School said she was excited to partner with YNDC to get her students involved outside the classroom. “It gives them an opportunity to see that there are careers in agriculture or forestry,” she said. “They see other companies come out and landscape, too. But this, with YNDC, is a free service in Youngstown. I also think it was a great opportunity for them to interact with the community in a way that they've never really seen, and to get to know another organization that's local to Youngstown doing community work.”
